The Four Suits & Their Elements

The 56 Minor Arcana cards of the tarot are divided into four suits, each associated with one of the classical elements: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Each suit governs a different sphere of human experience, from creative ambition and emotion to intellect and material reality.

Understanding the suits allows you to quickly grasp the general energy of any reading. A spread dominated by Cups suggests an emotionally driven situation; one filled with Swords points to conflict, communication, or mental challenge; many Pentacles indicate material concerns; many Wands signal creative energy, ambition, or change.

🔥 Wands — The Suit of Fire

Associated with: Fire • South • Spring • Choleric temperament

Core themes: Creativity, ambition, passion, inspiration, career, energy, growth, enterprise, spiritual development

Wands are the suit of fire and spirit. They represent our drive to create, to achieve, to be seen and recognised. When Wands appear in a reading, they point to areas of life charged with creative energy, ambition, and movement — new projects being born, passion igniting, or the restless urge to grow and explore.

In their most positive expression, Wands speak of inspiration, confidence, and the courage to pursue your vision. At their most challenging, they can indicate scattered energy, impulsiveness, burnout, or creative blockage. The suit is fundamentally energetic — it is rarely quiet or still.

Key figures: Entrepreneurs, artists, visionaries, spiritual seekers, people in career transitions, those driven by passion and purpose.

In a reading, many Wands suggest: A period of creative activity, ambitious undertakings, rapid movement, or a situation that calls for energy and courage.

💧 Cups — The Suit of Water

Associated with: Water • West • Summer • Phlegmatic temperament

Core themes: Emotion, relationships, intuition, love, dreams, the unconscious, creativity, spiritual connection

Cups are the suit of the heart. They represent our emotional life in all its depth — love and grief, joy and sorrow, dreams and fantasies, the ebb and flow of feeling. The element of Water moves and takes the shape of its container, and so Cups often indicate situations that are fluid, changeable, and shaped by emotional undercurrents.

Cups rule our relationships — romantic, familial, and platonic — as well as our inner life: the dreams we carry, the intuitions we follow or suppress, the feelings we find hard to name. They also govern creativity in the sense of imagination and the flow of ideas from the unconscious.

In a reading, many Cups suggest: An emotionally significant situation, relationship dynamics at the forefront, a need to listen to your intuition, or a period requiring emotional processing.

⚔️ Swords — The Suit of Air

Associated with: Air • East • Autumn • Sanguine temperament

Core themes: Thought, communication, conflict, truth, challenge, decision, clarity, intellect, justice

Swords are the suit of the mind. Sharp, swift, and double-edged, they represent our capacity for thought, analysis, and communication — and the pain that often accompanies truth. Swords cut through confusion and illusion, but they can also cut what we would prefer to keep whole.

The suit is associated with conflict, difficulty, and mental challenge, but this is not without purpose. The difficult cards of the Swords suit — the Three of Swords, the Nine, the Ten — reflect genuine human suffering and struggle, but they also point toward the clarity and transformation that can emerge from walking through darkness honestly. Swords ask us to think clearly, speak truthfully, and face what we would rather avoid.

In a reading, many Swords suggest: Mental activity at the forefront, communication challenges, conflict or tension needing resolution, important decisions, or a situation requiring clarity and honest assessment.

🌿 Pentacles — The Suit of Earth

Associated with: Earth • North • Winter • Melancholic temperament

Core themes: Material reality, money, work, health, home, nature, resources, stability, long-term investment

Pentacles are the suit of the physical world. They govern everything that is tangible, material, and embodied: money and finances, work and career (in the practical sense of livelihood), health and the body, home and property, and our relationship with the natural world. Pentacles move slowly compared to the other suits — they represent the steady accumulation of resources, the patient tending of what we have built, the long view.

The suit asks us to be grounded, practical, and realistic. It reminds us that our spiritual and emotional lives are lived in bodies that need food, shelter, and security. At their best, Pentacles speak of abundance, stability, and the satisfaction of honest work. At their most challenging, they can indicate financial difficulty, materialism, or stagnation.

In a reading, many Pentacles suggest: Financial or career matters at the forefront, practical concerns needing attention, questions of stability and security, or a situation calling for patience and steady effort.

The Court Cards

Each suit includes four court cards: the Page, Knight, Queen, and King. These can represent actual people in your life, aspects of yourself, or archetypal energies at play in your situation.
