The Four Suits & Their Elements

The 56 Minor Arcana cards of the tarot are divided into four suits, each associated with one of the classical elements: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Each suit governs a different sphere of human experience, from creative ambition and emotion to intellect and material reality.

Understanding the suits allows you to quickly grasp the general energy of any reading. A spread dominated by Cups suggests an emotionally driven situation; one filled with Swords points to conflict, communication, or mental challenge; many Pentacles indicate material concerns; many Wands signal creative energy, ambition, or change.

Wands are the suit of fire and spirit. They represent our drive to create, to achieve, to be seen and recognised. In their most positive expression, Wands speak of inspiration, confidence, and the courage to pursue your vision. At their most challenging, they can indicate scattered energy, impulsiveness, burnout, or creative blockage. The suit is fundamentally energetic — it is rarely quiet or still.

Pentacles are the suit of the physical world. Pentacles move slowly compared to the other suits — they represent the steady accumulation of resources, the patient tending of what we have built, the long view.

The suit asks us to be grounded, practical, and realistic. It reminds us that our spiritual and emotional lives are lived in bodies that need food, shelter, and security. At their best, Pentacles speak of abundance, stability, and the satisfaction of honest work. At their most challenging, they can indicate financial difficulty, materialism, or stagnation.

In a reading, many Pentacles suggest: Financial or career matters at the forefront, practical concerns needing attention, questions of stability and security, or a situation calling for patience and steady effort.

The Court Cards

Each suit includes four court cards: the Page, Knight, Queen, and King. These can represent actual people in your life, aspects of yourself, or archetypal energies at play in your situation.

• Pages — Young, curious, receptive energy; new beginnings or messages in the suit's domain
• Knights — Active, mobile energy; the suit's qualities in motion, sometimes to excess
• Queens — Mature, internalized mastery of the suit's energy; receptive authority
