How Tarot Works

Tarot is a deck of 78 illustrated cards, divided into the Major Arcana (22 cards representing universal life themes) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards divided into four suits — Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles). Each card carries rich symbolic meaning developed over centuries of esoteric tradition.

A tarot reading involves selecting a spread — a pattern that assigns meaning to each card position — then drawing cards and interpreting them in relation to their position and your question. Cards can appear upright or reversed, adding additional layers of nuance. Common spreads range from a single clarifying card to the elaborate ten-card Celtic Cross, which explores your situation from multiple angles.

Tarot does not predict the future with certainty. Instead, it acts as a reflective mirror, surfacing patterns, tensions, and possibilities you might not consciously recognize. Many people find tarot useful for decision-making, self-reflection, and exploring emotional situations from new perspectives.

Our AI interpretations honour this tradition by maintaining a mystical, thoughtful tone — providing insight rather than instruction, and directing all guidance toward you, the reader.

Six Beautifully Illustrated Tarot Decks

Each deck in The Digital Seer comes from a distinct tradition, time period, and visual language. Free users have access to the classic Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Seeker and Mystic subscribers unlock additional historical and modern decks.

Rider-Waite-Smith

1909 · Free for all users

The world's most widely recognised tarot deck, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith under Arthur Edward Waite's direction. Its richly symbolic imagery established the visual language that most modern decks follow. Each card — including the Minor Arcana — features a fully illustrated scene.

Visconti-Sforza

c. 1450 ·Seeker & Mystic Tiers

One of the oldest surviving tarot decks, painted for the Visconti and Sforza families of Renaissance Milan. The imagery reflects 15th-century Italian court culture, medieval Christian theology, and heraldic symbolism. An extraordinary window into tarot's earliest origins.

Tarot de Marseille

1701 ·Seeker & Mystic Tiers

The dominant European tarot tradition from the 17th through 19th centuries, the Marseille deck is characterised by bold geometric pip cards and stylised Major Arcana. French cartomancy practitioners developed a rich numerological and elemental interpretive system that we preserve in this deck's meanings.

Sola Busca

1491 · Mystic Tier only

The oldest complete tarot deck with fully illustrated pip cards, the Sola Busca features enigmatic imagery rooted in Hermetic alchemy and Renaissance esoteric philosophy. Its unusual iconography — mythological and historical figures — inspired Pamela Colman Smith's designs for the Rider-Waite Minor Arcana.

Oswald Wirth

1889 · Mystic Tier only

Designed by Swiss occultist Oswald Wirth under the guidance of Stanislas de Guaita, this deck integrates Kabbalistic symbolism and Hebrew letter correspondences into each Major Arcana card, reflecting the 19th-century Western occult revival. Interpretations emphasise Hermetic and Kabbalistic associations.

Dark Fantasy

2025 · Mystic Tier only

A modern original deck with haunting gothic imagery — shadowy figures, skeletal forms, infernal fire, and moonlit ruins. Designed for shadow work and introspective readings, its interpretations emphasise transformation through darkness, forbidden knowledge, and emotional intensity.
